Since we got into that whole gay Bert And Ernie debate, I got myself in a Sesame Street mood. So I thought I’d share one of my favorite Sesame Street shorts and the new remake/reanimation it got treated to. Remember this?
Pinball Number 12
Here’s the remake:
Pinball Number 12 (reanimated)
So I eventually thought, why not post some of my favorite shorts from the Sesame Street. These are indelible sensations to me, transporting me back to when I was a happy little boy, as opposed to the embittered adult that I am…let’s leave that for a future post, shall we? Watching some these got me misty-eyed!

Two Little Girls In A Little Dollhouse
Inch Worm
And how fitting, we started playing a song from Rico Blanco which is a remake of Ladybug Picnic, another Sesame Street classic. Here’s the original version, in case you were too young to see it.

Bert and Ernie are NOT gay. This has been confirmed by an official statement from Sesame Street on their Facebook page, as a reaction to an online campaign to have the longtime friends (some say lovers) married.
The official statement read: “Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.“
Many questioned the assertion that the puppets do not have sexual orientations because Miss Piggy for example had always been liberal about her feelings for Kermit the echoserang frog. So obviously, her gender is female and her orientation is straight.
Some people find the whole debate (the muppets, not the gay rights issue) frivolous, reducing the serious issue of gay civil right into the fictitious realm of muppet sexuality, while others are taking the whole issue to heart with much gravity. They argue that rejection or acceptance of what is considered right and wrong starts at an early age. So if Sesame Street represents with male and female, white, black and latino, why not gay characters? So no matter where you stand on the issue, the official statement is that Bert and Ernie are not gay. In fact, they’re not straight either. They’re puppets, therefore they’re neither.
