I’m devastated that I won’t be in Manila when Cyndi Lauper holds her concert! Waaah, she’s one of the most indelible artists of my youth! Together with Madonna, Michael Jackson, and British Invasion artists like Culture Club and Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper pretty much supplied the soundtrack of my high school years. And the one time she comes to Manila, I’m in Thailand! I’d probably cry if I hear her sing “Time After Time” or her stirring version of “At Last”. Oh well, try to catch her, she performs tonight at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Call Ticketnet at 9115555 for tickets.
We decided to just chill and enjoy the beach and the resort for the whole day. Literally we were either swimming or the lounging the whole day. Patong Beach is gorgeous. It’s an expansive white beach, about as long as Boracay, stretching out as far as the eye can see. It’s quite amazing. One unique trait though, and I don’t know if it’s good or bad, beach chairs line the entire stretch of the beach, from end to end, but it isn’t for free. If you want to use the chairs, you pay the people who put them there. They also sell juices and shakes. But they left a good of the beach free. I guess they’re zoned as to where the beach chairs can be placed. Another thing I realized, is that Phuket is like a mini Russia. Maybe 80-90% of the caucasian foreigners are Russians. You also see lots of Russian restos everywhere. And weirdly, other than the musicians in the resorts, we haven’t seen any Filipinos, tourists or employees. I know there are a lot in Bangkok, but hardly any in Phuket. The pool is also gorgeous, and the water perfectly warm. We only left the water in time for dinner. We looked for cheaper places to eat since hotel prices are steep, and we feasted on phad thai and other Thai favorites (we saw a lone Filipino restaurant). Again, a trip to Bangla, where I drank the best mango shake in my life. No sugar, and strangely no ice. But it was GOOOD. I can’t really describe it in words, you’d have to taste it to believe it. I’m so dark and burnt now, I resemble an asian Dora, but with a pixie ‘do. Sigh.
