December 10, 2009 → The Top Ten Answers To The Question: “Who Do You Love More, Your Mom Or Your Dad?”

I thought I’d do an experiment, and post my underwater photographs in black & white. I just wanted to see if, even without the dazzling colors, the beauty of the undersea world could still be captured. I hope you enjoy these:

This next one is my favorite. It’s a stunning example of camouflage. I don’t know if you guys can see it, but there’s actually a crustacean-like creature nestled in between the crynoid arms. When the dive master was trying to point it out to me, it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what the hell he was pointing at. I just found it the most fascinating creature:

Thank you to so many of you who sent me links on Facebook and Twitter! I’m so excited/nervous for this sequel to one of my most favorite shows EVER, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. Excited because if it’s anywhere near the quality of its predecessor, then I’m in for another ride. But nervous, because if it sucks anywhere near the disastrous movie version my M. Night Shyamalan, then I’m in for another disappointment. It’s no big secret that Avatar was not just a cartoon series for me, it was a profound experience. I was so sucked into the world of Aang that I would have to be alone in my room, with all the lights out, aircon full blast, wrapped in blankets as I watched the episodes in bed.

The new series happens directly after Aang’s reign as Avatar. Korra is the next incarnation and is under the water tribe this time. I feel a little safe because most of the original creators are still involved, so hopefully the characters are just as captivating as the original series. This preview was shown in the recently concluded Comic-Con, and the series won’t be airing until next year. Cross your fingers Avatar fans!

Even as early as a week before our little weekend in Bohol, we were bracing ourselves for testy weather since all forecasts pointed to gloomy, if not all-out typhoonic weather altogether. So we were surprised that although it was as bright and sunny as we would’ve wanted it to be, the weather at least wasn’t foul. It was mostly cloudy, with some decent sunny periods every now and then. Plus, we were mostly there to dive, so rain wouldn’t really be a problem when you’re 60-100 feet underwater. We stayed at Amorita Resort in Panglao Island, at the very end of the quaint Alona beach. The digs were nice enough, not as luxurious as the fancy resorts we’ve been to, but more than sufficient for a nice weekend out of town.

The food was also okay; you can see the effort that was put in presenting the food. Nothing exceptional, but every now and then they like to spring a surprise, like their unique version of kare-kare, which was a pleasure to explore.

For me, more than the rooms, it’s the outdoor stuff that far outshines what the interiors lack in punch. The highlight of the resort is the pool area, which is right outside the dining area. Either swimming in the pool or just lounging in those wonderful cushions on the wooden pool decks is a lovely way to chill, especially at sunset when the winds get a bit chilly, and you’re wrapped snuggly in a blanket as you read a book or just watch the sun go down as you look over a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean.

It’s such a lovely place that I spent more time in the pool area than I did inside the room. They also have a nice view deck, just to the side of the pool, also overlooking Alona beach, where you can just chill, have drinks, and whatever it is you like to do as you look at the ocean view. They can also set up a romantic sunset dinner at the deck for a special touch.

And of course the beach. We didn’t get to explore the lovely Alona beach until the afternoon of our second day. What a shame, because given how much we loved it, we would’ve wanted to spend more time there. It’s supposedly even better during the amihan season because the winds blow away from the beach so no sea grass washes ashore, unlike now, during the habagat season where there was quite a bit of vegetation on the seashore. It’s like a smaller, less harried Boracay. Or maybe a finer, less bedraggled Puerto Galera. Actually it reminded us more of Koh Samui in Thailand. I promised myself I’d return soon to spend more time at the beach and enjoy that little piece of white sand shore.

Of course we had our little scare on our way home. We were supposed to take the SuperCat ferry from Bohol to Cebu, spend the afternoon and evening there, then take the last flight out to Manila. When we got to the port, all ferry trips to Cebu were cancelled due to bad weather. We had no choice but to rush and see if we could still get plane tickets from Bohol straight to Manila. The last Cebu Pacific flight back was already about to take off. PAL was already fully booked. Our last chance was Zest Air. Funny, they had TWO LAST TICKETS LEFT. So we immediately booked, albeit begrudgingly, since we forfeited our AirPhil Cebu-Manila tickets and lost a half-day jaunt in Cebu. But I guess better that than stranded. On our way back, we were welcomed with open arms by Juaning, the whole flight engulfed by billows of clouds, quite awesome to see actually, but thankfully deposited safely to the ground, just the way we want it.

Sooo Pinoy is a movement spearheaded by Unilever Food Solutions to promote Filipino Cuisine in the dining out market. The goal was to inform Filipinos about the rich cuisine we have as a nation and to encourage Pinoys to dine out and enjoy our very own rich cuisine. The movement started last year, and Sooo Pinoy came out with monthly articles talking about our all-time favorite Pinoy dishes such as Sinigang, Bulalo and Crispy Pata, which people voted on via mobile as their ultimate Filipino comfort food. Last year’s winner was Sinigang.

This year, the partnership goes bigger as Unilever Food Solutions team up with Philippine Daily Inquirer, Team manila, and the Sooo Pinoy ambassadors Chico And Delamar (woot, that’s us!) and Juana Change (Mae Paner), as the campaign promotes not only Filipino food but the local operators who serve our Filipino favorites.

Each month, the Philippine Star and the Philippine Daily Inquirer announce the dish feature of the month and the 30 restaurant nominees who serve the best focus dish. Diners then vote via Facebook which they think is the best restaurant serving that dish which culminates at the end of each month. The winning Top 10 are then featured via Facebok, PDI, Philstar and the Sooo Pinoy ambassadors.

As for us, Chico and Delamar, as ambassadors, we will participate in a 15-restaurant challenge. We will be dining is 15 restaurants that specialize in Pinoy Cuisine, and then we will blog about our experiences in each restaurant. How cool of a task is that? We’re very stoked because both Delle and i are big eaters and huge fans of Filipino food. Personally, I can eat adobo any time, anywhere. Kare-kare is also one of my all time favorites. And who can say no to crispy pata? Even our barkada is a huge fan of eating, in general, and Filipino cuisine specifically. One friend’s specialty is his asado, which melts in your mouth, and his white adobo, which sends us in paroxyms of pleasure. Another friend’s specialty is his binagoongan, which he cooks to a point where you can no longer distinguish which is meat and which is fat. Absolutely divine. They love to cook, and we love to eat. And whenever we eat out as a group, we gravitate towards our favorite Pinoy restos like Cafe Juanita, Fely J’s, O Kitchen, Via Mare, Abe, among many others. So you see, this cause is very dear to us personally. Even when we travel, one of the highlights is to discover the cuisine of whatever province we’re in (we’re also huge advocates of discovering the many beautiful travel spots in the Philippines).

So watch for our posts on our blogs, Twitter and Facebook accounts, and we’ll take you with us on our journey to rediscover Filipino Cuisine at its finest! For more details and updates, visit the Sooo Pinoy Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/SoooPinoy and you can also follow @SoooPinoy on Twitter. We’ll be starting our restaurant challenge this week, and we can’t wait!

We’re so honored to be the Sooo Pinoy ambassadors and hopefully we do a good job in bringing Pinoy cuisine back to the forefront of Pinoy palates all over the countries. And if because of our posts you guys troop to your favorite Pinoy restos, then we’ve done our jobs! We’re sooo excited to be part of Sooo Pinoy!

Before I write my review of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2)”, here’s just another reason why we love Daniel Radcliffe. It’s not just the uncanny resemblance to the boy who lived, or his spot-on performance that breathed life into the character, but he’s a quirky personality overall.

I know it’s but a silly parlor trick, but I’m just hoping he’s got more aces up his sleeve after Harry Potter, I’d like to see him transcend his most iconic role, and actually have a life after Harry. It would be a shame if he didn’t

It’s been confirmed: a 22-year-old woman has been discovered to have a third nipple at the bottom of her foot. The medical staff that discovered this medical records first said in a statement:

“A 22-year-old woman sought medical care for a lesion in the plantar region of her left foot, a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair. Microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, eccrine glands, and sebaceous glands.

Fat tissue was noted at the base of the lesion. Clinical and histopathologic findings were consistent with the diagnosis of supernumerary breast tissue, also known as pseudomamma.

To our knowledge, this is the first report of supernumerary breast tissue on the foot. Supernumerary breast tissue, known as SBT, is rarely found beyond the mammary line. But they have been seen before on the back, shoulder, face, and even thigh.”

It was a toss up between “Susole” and “Talampakanipple”. But a last minute nickname took home the prize: “Footong”.

Yesterday evening, we attended a beer appreciation dinner by San Miguel called, L’art de la Gustation. Basically, it’s a 6-course meal, created to match 3 of San Miguel’s iconic beers, San Miguel Premium, San Miguel Super Dry and Cerveza Negra. Basically it’s to introduce beer as the perfect companion to fine dining. Interesting concept, and here’s the menu:

The event was held at La Regalade with chef Karen Martin as captain of the ship. Here goes:

Rabbit Rillette with Dijon Mustard and Cornichon

Terrine Maison with Onion Marmalade and Pearl Onion

Tuna Carpaccio with Ten Spice Rub

(matched with San Miguel Premium)

Calamari and Chorizo

(matched with San Miguel Super Dry)

Goat Cheese and Pear Salad

(matched with Ceveza Negra)

Snapper with Rosemary Butter

(matched with San Miguel Premium)

Lamb Navarin with Couscous

(matched with San Miguel Super Dry)

Cremé Chocolat

(matched with Cerveza Negra)

It was such an adventure in gustatory exploration. By the end of the meal, we would’ve gone through 6 bottles of beer. I tried my best not to finish each bottle, to reserve enough space to accommodate all 6 courses. And if a course is finished, they take away whatever beer was left, and replace it with the nicely chilled beer for the following course.

The highlight for me was the Fried Goat Cheese on a bed of Spinach Leaves with Sauteed Pears. There were three distinct flavors, all wonderfully playing around in my mouth, each one as delightful as the other. It was light, refreshing and full of flavors. It was such a satisfying salad, I’d say even for non-salad eaters. The other highlight for me, and which was on top of most of the other RX jocks’ lists, was the Dark Belgian Chocolate Custard served with Almond and Coconut Tuille. The interplay of the nutty taste of the Tuille and the sweetness of the chocolate was heavenly in the mouth. And I just realized that both favorites were the dishes matched with Cerveza Negra. This was actually the very first time I ever tried Cerveza Negra. It’s got an interesting malty flavor that I found surprisingly perfect for meals. I also found interesting that the two strongest dishes in terms of taste, the spicy calamari and the distinctive lamb were both matched with the more robust San Miguel Super Dry. Of the three beers though, my favorite was the San Miguel Premium. Mainly because it’s so smooth. But don’t be fooled, smooth as it was, it was nevertheless potent.

The experience was very interesting, my first time to have different beers matched with fine dining. And for sure, it won’t be my last.

When I first got an invite to Google+, I had no idea what the heck that was. Apparently, it’s the latest to challenge Facebook’s supremacy in the social networking biz. Who knows, before you know it, Facebook could be tomorrow’s Friendster. So I dived in after a week of dilly-dallying of whether or not I was getting into it, but when I did, I came out a little bit confused. To be fair, I felt the same way the first time I signed up for Facebook. It’s pretty much like FB, with some Twitter mixed in, but with a twist. For me, the biggest twist is the concept of “Circles”.

On Facebook, everyone on your network is a “friend”, even if they’re family. With Google plus, you assign everyone in your network into circles. You basically have to assign a label for each person. For instance, you have a circle for “besties”, one for “work”, one for “family”, one for “acquaintances”, one for “badminton group”, one for “jejeberks”, and so on. So each time you post a status update or video or photo, you can opt to publish it for the public to see, or you can assign only specific circles to see it. So if you’re posting your drunk pics, I don’t think you’d want your family to see them. This solves the FB problem of your mom seeing you in drag in some drunken night out, or your boss seeing your Boracay pics on the weekend you called in sick. It’s a little bit more work, but it has it’s advantages. Another cool feature I like “Hangouts”.

Basically it’s multiple webcam chatting, where you and your friends are like hanging out together even if everyone’s in a different place.  I haven’t actually tried this, but I’m so curious about it. The regular version of this is “Huddle”.

The way I understand it, it’s like you chat as a circle. So if you have a barkada circle, you can just post your messages and everyone in that group will see it. Sound good to me!

Actually, everything about it really sounds good, but whenever I’m on it, it’s still pretty bare, and hardly anyone’s in it. Only a couple of friends are in my circles, and it’s no fun until most of your family and friends are on it. So get an account already so things become more interesting! I don’t know though if it’s still by invitation only. What I know is, you can’t sign in unless you were invited by someone who’s in it already (or something like that). Will this be the next big thing? We won’t know until you guys get on it!

Oh, one more thing, you can follow people you don’t know as well, like on Twitter, so you can follow the celebs or people you find interesting without them having to add you or something. And when you do add someone, they won’t know which circle you added them to. You can add them in the circle “bitches” and they wouldn’t know any better. So in case you’re there, check me out, it’s Chico Garcia (although I haven’t really posted anything yet). I’ll try to post a test photo after I publish this.
