I was watching Tyra Banks on TV and she rose to fame on the wings of her hit show, America’s Next Top Model. So it got me wondering: Who are the top models in the fashion industry today? Knowing very little about fashion, I decided to research it on the internet, and found the definitive list on Models.com, where they post the Top 50 male and female models today. It’s like the model equivalent of the ATP rankings for tennis players. They base it on the amount of ad campaigns they’ve bagged. Of course I didn’t know any of them, since the last batch of supermodels I remember were those in the era of Tyra and Naomi Campbell and Elle McPherson. So here they are, as of March 2011, the top 5 models working today.
FEMALE:
Number 5:
Abbey Lee Kershaw

Number 4: It’s a tie.
Sasha Pivarova

Karlie Kloss

Number 3:
Anja Rubik

Number 2: It’s a tie again.
Natasha Poly

Fraja Beha Erichsen

Number 1:
Lara Stone

Apparently, Lara Stone is a cultural sensation, although I’ve never really heard of her before. Apparently, she’s HUGE in the fashion industry. And I noticed a lot of the top models aren’t your usual standard pretty. A lot of them look quite odd, actually.
And now for the male models, who are paid much, MUCH less than their female counterparts. In modeling, this is one industry where the men are far inferior in status and rank as compared to the females. Most people can name a couple of female supermodels while many would be hard-pressed to name even one famous male model.
MALE:
Number 5:
Nicola Jovanovic

Number 4:
Clement Chabernaud

Number 3:
Simon Nessman

Number 2:
Sean O’Pry

Number 1:
Chico Garcia

JOKE! (Obviously…)
Baptiste Giabiconi

Again, I don’t really know any of the male models either. It would’ve rocked if I were the top male model. Zinger-zongwriter na, mhowdhel pa!
