A little tip: this post is best appreciated if you read it from beginning to end, and make sure you watch the videos as you go along for full effect.
I was supposed to post the first part of my Moalboal escapade, but this was hot off the proverbial presses. Short history: Beyonce is about to release her first double album, “I Am…Sasha Fierce” (one disc all fast and energetic, and the other all slow and dramatic), and she released 2 singles at the same time, to represent both “sides” of her. The first one most of you are familiar with, the emotional “If I Were A Boy”, but this post is about the other single, the frenetic, “Single Ladies”. This song represents the Sasha Fierce in her, the Beyonce who loses all inhibitions onstage. It’s classic Beyonce, in the same vein as her monster hit, “Crazy In Love”:
Some say she stole the concept from a 60’s dance routine performed by Gwen Vernon and choreographed by the great Bob Fosse. Here’s the video. I thought at first it was a stretch, but there’s a part in the choreography where the girls sort of punch downwards; it’s eerily similar to something Beyonce did. Plus, since Bob Fosse is a broadway legend, and musicales are the lifeblood of international gaydom, and most of Beyonce’s team are probably overrun by gays, it’s not such a stretch that maybe they did crib from another gay icon.
Then of course, being the gay icon that she is, gay men all around the world started deluging YouTube with dozens of videos of gays and trannies emulating their heroine, destiny’s favorite child, Sasha Zaturnah, etse, Fierce. Here is the most famous one, with almost a million hits. He’s got the choreography down pat, and the attitude in buckets. Not for the conservative nor the faint-hearted:
Then of course, the latest in the ongoing saga of “Single Ladies”, SNL can’t be far behind in exploring the zeitgeist that is Beyonce. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it. So the only thing I’ll say, is it’s FIERCE.
I won’t be surprised if this isn’t the last word on the song. But I doubt if they can top the image of THE Justin Timberlake in a tangga, ala-Alma Moreno, circa “Lovli-Ness”. Now I know what he meant when he said he’s bringin’ sexy back…
