The Best And The Rest 82

Traveling always involves a lot of actual and imagined dangers.  When we were in Moalboal over the weekend, we went to Panagsama beach then took a 30 minute tricycle ride to White beach, in the pitch dark of night, lit weakly by the moon.  He went into a dirt road, instead of the concrete route, since he said it was a shortcut.  I started imagining that our tricycle driver was a mugger, or that we were about to be ambushed by aswangs or that the tricycle driver was about to deliver us to a satanic cult waiting for some fresh meat for their human sacrifice.  What the mind will tell you when you’re gripped with fear, in the dark, in the middle of nowhere.

June 30, 2008 → The Top Ten Moments Of Danger

  1. Mabi-Nge – I belong to the cheering squad during my high school. I was one of those being thrown in the air. When my colleagues accidentally missed my fall, I had a head injury. I needed 6 stitches which still has scars up until now.
  2. Benj – My dad is a police officer. When I was in high school, we were awakened by a call informing us that my dad was ambushed by the NPA. They ambushed the convoy. The hummer my dad was in struck a land mine & the whole NPA company opened fire. My dad jumped out & fought back with just a 45 caliber pistol. He was the only one who survived with minor injuries.
  3. Maricar – Back in grade school, I fell into an open manhole during a flood. Good thing my backpack filled with books got me stuck at the hole, stopping my getting sucked completely with the floodwaters.
  4. Coachdanny – In high school, the toilet next to our classroom exploded.  It was a homemade bomb, allegedly meant as a hit on a guy by the rival fraternity.
  5. Ronnie - One time I inserted a tempory pacemaker into a patient since her heartbeat was so slow. While in the process of inserting the pacemaker wire into her heart, she complained of dizziness. The heart suddenly stopped and she went into seizures. Luckily, I was successful enough to insert the wire. The heart started beating again and the patient immediately regained consciousness.
  6. No name – One summer a jellyfish sting caused a massive allergic reaction 30 minutes away from the nearest hospital.  Thankfully I survived and found out at the hospital that I was pregnant!
  7. Taurean Tigre – My brother’s finger got caught in the teeth of a cement mixer.
  8. Beth – My brother was dragged by a tricycle, ripping his ear off.
  9. TristanEric – I once saw a 3-meter cobra in our sala! I had to throw a pillow to distract it so I could ask help from our neighbors.
  10. Jose De Vangenge – On a beach in Cavite, I was just sitting by a shore when I felt a stabbing pain in my foot. Turned out a large fishing hook sank into my big toe.
  11. Ynaki – While in Baclaran, I got caught in a stampede between a snatcher and an angry mob. Next thing I knew, I was inside a siopao store.
  12. MangJose – I work on a ship and I experienced encountering a force13 typhoon. It was a head-on encounter just because we were misinformed by the weather people of Australia. And the Capt didn’t like to ask for a weather report with kasi MAHAL DAW!
  13. No name – In a multinational I worked for, I didn’t regularize a probee, only to realize he was a son of a member of the Alex Boncayao Brigade.  I had to go into hiding for 3 months before I settled the issue with his parents.
  14. LOipogi – I had a schoolmate, who, during the indigenous sports day, was walkng on bamboo stilts. She suddenly fell hard, legs between the part she was standing on. Her pepe needed stitches.
  15. No name – During my PT internship in an obscure clinic, we were required to join a mock beauty pageant exclusively for male interns and during the talent portion, I inadvertently swallowed gasoline wen trying to perform baton-twirling with flames.
  16. Windsurfer – I decided to go windsurfing in Anilao right before typhoon Frank hit. Sudeenly the storm hit while I was in the middle of the channel.  I almost didn’t make it back to shore because of the high waves.
  17. SPY Shadow – While we were driving at night on a remote road in Qatar, we nearly hit a herd of camels crossing our path.
  18. Alle – I swear this is a true story! A lady resident of the Molave Residence Hall was rushed to the Infirmary because she inserted the mouth of a 12-ounce softdrink bottle in her genitalia, & couldn’t remove it because of the air that was trapped inside!
  19. Greg – I picked up this pretty girl in a bar, and as we walked to the car, 2 men came from out of nowhere and got my wallet, my watch, and the keys to my car.  Apparently, kasabwat sila nung girl.
  20. Jessie rocks – My friend & I built a small basketball court in our backyard. The ball was so small that you can easily grip it with 1 hand & dunk it in the ring. When I made a dunk, sumabit accidentally yung engagement ring ko sa basketball ring. When I came down, my ring finger was pulled out from my hand and naiwan sa ring.  Blood started to flow. It was so painful that I almost passed out.
